Do these headlines scare you? They do me. Hardly a day goes by without
some mention by the news media of a new energy related price surge.
Oil is hovering around $100 per barrel and long term forecasts put it
above $250 per barrel in the near future. As you can imagine, gasoline,
diesel and natural gas will all follow the same sharply rising price
curve. In other words, energy prices could soar out of control.
Skyrocketing Energy Prices due to Finite Supply of Oil
According to Kenneth S. Deffeyes, Princeton University Professor and
author of Beyond Oil, The View from Hubbert’s Peak:
As I am sure you know, this oil production peak is called peak oil by
geologists. Forecast in the 1950s and verified in 1970, geologist M.
King Hubbert shook up the oil industry by his uncanny and absolutely
correct prediction of the oil production peak in the United States. He
then used the same methodology on the world oil supply. In his book,
Beyond Oil, The View from Hubbert’s Peak, Dr, Deffeyes states that based
on M. King Hubbert’s calculations:
“It is my opinion that the peak will occur in late 2005 or in the first
few months of 2006. … I nominate Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2005 as
World Oil Peak Day. We can pause and give thanks for the years 1901 to
2005 when abundant oil and natural gas fueled enormous changes in our
society. At the same time, we have to face up to reality. World oil
production is going to decline, slowly at first and then more rapidly.”
Echoing this, Craig Morris, in his book The Energy Switch notes:
“Basically, the oil left in the ground will not be cheap, nor
will we be able to bring it to market in amounts large enough to keep up
with demand.”
Petroleum Review Magazine, February 2004, noted:
